Much is being made about the Competition Tribunal success in freeing up the data from the Toronto Real Estate Board. "A victory for the consumer" is the headline one sees repeatedly.

A few relevant points are important to consider here:

  1. Data is only relevant if you have someone knowledgeable to interpret it.
  2. A good realtor will freely make the information available to a client.

As you know, the NRTeam has been researching the real estate data by neighbourhood for a few years. The real estate boards provide press releases on a broad spectrum of that month's data. We take this and break it down into neighbourhoods, because we find this is more relevant. For our clients, we regularly make this data available. We don't want to overload people with the statistics, but once or twice a year we remind you that this is available.

Of course, if you are actively engaged in making a move, you will know the NRTeam believes in full transparency on data. Always have, always will, regardless of any Competition Tribunal ruling. But the fact is, if you don't have an expert who is familiar with the local market, the data will have little relevance. Retain a good realtor. They will have your best interests in mind. You can't legislate this.
