Looking for something to do to support the community? There are many initiatives that have started and have been growing over the past couple of weeks – anything from monetary donations to home projects.

First and foremost the most impactful thing we can do as a community as well as individuals is to give each other space. This is the one time in your life where you can cross the street to avoid that stranger on your walk without judgement and instead receive praise. Social distancing is a new concept and we wouldn’t be surprised if it is the phrase of 2020. However this does not mean losing touch; remember that time when you complained about not having enough time? This is it! Call that friend, skype that cousin or take a zoom call with that colleague.

With that we also encourage you to be conscious, when you are out getting essentials, walking your dog or chatting with friends. Be the neighbour you want to have by checking in from a distance or by phone, particularly those who are at risk. Staying up to date with recommendations from Health Canada and following credible news sources is important, especially when things can be misleading in many other places.

If you have the means be sure to make any sort of donation to our local and national non-profits currently supporting the front lines or those in need. Locally you can donate to the Oakville Fare Share Foodbank or our Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Worried about those with mental health issues in a time of social isolation? Be sure to check out what Kids Help Phone is working on to support the youth amid the pandemic. Concerned about those more vulnerable to the virus? The Alzheimer Society of Ontario is working to help families and their loved ones in creating connections during quarantine; or reach out to a local seniors residence; many are in need of medical supplies or monetary support. At a National level the United Way’s latest campaign, “Local Love in a Global Crisis,” is making sure that community services are able to provide important basic needs to everyone. At a global level the World Health Organization has the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, they are leading the global effort to support countries across the world in testing, detecting and treating those dealing with COVID-19 (links to all charities mentioned can be found below).

Looking for something that might use up some time at home? We are very much enjoying Front Line Porch Support: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7pm, we are out with our neighbours banging pots and pans. This coincides with the shift change at hospitals, and provides people an opportunity to show their support and thanks to those that are working on the frontline including the truck drivers, the grocery store clerks, the nursery home workers. Note that this is a phenomenon taking place all over the world. Afraid to be out there creating a ruckus alone? Invite your neighbours! It has become something we look forward to in the evening, creates community, and is an opportunity to check in with everyone. Something else we are also enjoying is “Chalk Your Walk,” an activity for the family to spread a little joy to those around. We would love to see everyone’s creations!

Stay well and stay safe, we will get through this. We are after all safe at home, not stuck at home. Got some more ideas to help out our community during this time? We would love to hear about it.
